IMF Preview:
The war in Ukraine is taking a growing toll on Europe’s economic activity and reshaping policies. Record energy prices and high food prices have pushed inflation to exceptionally high levels, sharply lowering real incomes. High and persistent inflation is pushing central banks to raise policy rates, and governments to roll out new measures to address the cost-of-living crisis. As Europe enters a sharp economic slowdown, risks to growth are on the downside while those to inflation — particularly core inflation — are on the upside. How can European policymakers prevent deep recessions while bringing down inflation?
The presentation will cover the new IMF Regional Economic Outlook for Europe, delving into the outlook for growth and inflation, risks — including to inflation based on new IMF research, and implications for monetary and fiscal policies in both advanced and emerging Europe. The event in a hybrid format will be moderated by Jana Randow, Bloomberg News.
