Volker Wieland thinks sanctions against Russia are promising (FAZ, Börsen-Zeitung)

After Russia's attack on Ukraine, Prof. Volker Wieland sees the sanctions against Russia as a sensible measure. "They weaken not only the elites, but the national economy as a whole, and thus also Putin's ability to finance his army," he said in an interview with "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung".

If the war remains confined to Ukraine, a recession in Germany is unlikely this year, he said.Wieland believes the planned increase in the defense budget is justified. "Germany needs to translate its economic strength into adequate military defense capabilities that it can contribute to NATO," Wieland told "Börsen-Zeitung". Such an attack would most likely be avoided if the military capabilities of the attacked party were so great that the attackers would certainly get bloody heads.
