For Volker Wieland there is no reason for a further loosening of monetary policy ("Neue Zürcher Zeitung")

It is widely expected that the European Central Bank (ECB) will announce further monetary policy measures at its next meeting this week. According to Prof. Volker Wieland, however, there is "no need to panic". In his view, the ECB could do without any new measures and just wait and see as he explained in an interview with the Swiss newspaper "Neue Zürcher Zeitung".

According to Wieland, the ECB has missed the time for tightening monetary policy when the economy in the euro area was recovering in the last years. In a symmetric approach, the ECB could refrain from further loosening monetary policy again this time. Regarding inflation expectations, there is no fear of deanchoring, according to Wieland.
