In his statement regarding the corona stimulus package, Prof. Volker Wieland puts emphasis on debt sustainability

According to Prof. Volker Wieland, for the decision about the stimulus package in the corona crisis it is essential to put a special emphasis on debt sustainability. In a public consultation of the Bundestag's budget committee, Wieland said that stabilizing the economic situation and strengthening long-term growth opportunities should be the first priority in the current situation.

Therefore, it is not absolutely necessary to comply with the debt brake in the year 2021, Wieland said. However, this exception would not apply in the medium term. Regarding debt sustainability, Wieland warned against relying on the current interest rate levle. Interest rates would be higher again in the long run, he said.
