Volker Wieland advises against putting monetary policy in the service of climate protection (FAS, Börsen-Zeitung)

The European Central Bank's (ECB) new president Christine Lagarde wants to pursue a monetary policy in the name of climate protection. According to Prof. Volker Wieland, this is problematic. In an interview with the German weekly newspaper "Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung" and the financial daily "Börsen-Zeitung", he advised against putting monetary policy in the service of climate protection e.g. by buying green bonds.

This shows a low probability of success, he warned. "No central bank will be able to solve the climate problem". Moreover, for the central bank, this would entail a need to justify. "The more tasks the ECB wants to fulfill, the more vulnerable it becomes," he said.

According to Wieland, it is appropriate to take into account climate risks for the economic outlook. Futhermore, they are also relevant for financial stability and, thus, for the central bank. However, Wieland is critical of including climate protection as a secondary objective of the ECB. If this was the argument, then there would be many policy areas where the ECB could feel called to do something, Wieland said.
