Volker Wieland and members of the Council of Economic Experts call for "Unity in diversity" in Europe ("Ökonomenstimme", "Die Zeit")

The four members of the German Council of Economic Experts Lars Feld, Christoph Schmidt, Isabel Schnabel and Volker Wieland want the EU member states to cooperate further only in certain issues like security policy, asylum policy and climate policy.

However, in questions of fiscal policy, labor market policy and social policy, where the citizens have divergent views and do not want to give up their national sovereignty, the member states should assume more responsibility again, the authors write in an editorial in "Ökonomenstimme" and "Die Zeit". Furthermore, the no-bailout clause should be strengthened by a sovereign insolvency mechanism, the authors write.

Apart from that, the member states should strenghten their national competitiveness and rise to the challenges of the globalization. In the past, they had been tempted to expect from Europe protection from global competition in the first place.
