Volker Wieland: "The government can borrow as long as it can place bonds on the market." (Die Welt)

Climate protection, Corona aid, the German armed forces - in view of the measures announced by the government, Prof. Volker Wieland explains Germany's debt sustainability in an interview with "Die Welt".

"The government can borrow as long as it can place bonds on the market." That sets limits on debt, he said. He added that interest rates on German bonds cannot be expected to remain close to zero percent in the long run. "On the contrary, with higher inflation we will get higher interest rates, that was already apparent before the war in Ukraine.
