IMFS Basic Funding Extended to 2037
In November 2025 the Foundation of Monetary and Financial Stability and Goethe University Frankfurt agreed to jointly extend basic funding for the IMFS as a research center of Goethe University for another 10-year period from 2027 to 2037.
During this period, the Foundation of Monetary and Financial Stability will contribute a total of € 5.5 million to the funding of IMFS staff and activities. Similarly, the University will continue its more than equally substantial support for staff and other expenses of the Institute throughout this period and assures the perpetuation of the Institute beyond 2037. Within the University, the IMFS is a joint initiative of the Faculty of Economics and Business, the Faculty of Law and the Presidency of the University.
The renewal of such a major 10-year contribution by the Foundation of Monetary and Financial Stability and the support of Goethe University and its Faculties represent an important acknowledgment of the success of the Institute in its mission as well as a great opportunity for further developing and expanding its role. This is cause for great celebration at the Institute. IMFS professors and staff highly appreciate the avenues for future development and growth that are opened by this strong expression of support by the Foundation and Goethe University.
“The IMFS has become an integral part of the legal and economic discourse on the monetary and financial foundations of the Euro Area. It conducts high-level research, brings together key players in central banking, financial regulation and markets, and organises conferences and workshops for academics, practitioners and the public alike. It thus plays a major role in fulfilling the Foundation’s mission to raise the awareness of the value of price stability for society and to foster interdisciplinary research in economics and law. The Foundation is delighted to continue this fruitful collaboration with Goethe University.”
Thomas M.J. Möllers, Chairman of the Supervisory Board, Foundation Geld und Währung
“The IMFS exemplifies the particular strength of Goethe University: it combines excellent research with societal relevance. Its interdisciplinary work at the intersection of economics and law provides scientifically sound guidance on issues of monetary policy, financial stability, and regulation that are of central importance to the economy and society. The fact that we are continuing the core funding in partnership with the Geld und Währung Foundation through 2037 reflects our shared confidence in the institute’s outstanding work and, at the same time, represents a clear commitment to the long-term strengthening of this internationally renowned research center.”
Enrico Schleiff, President, Goethe University Frankfurt
“The IMFS is a particularly important pillar in the strategy of Economics at Goethe University. Internationally, the IMFS is one of the most significant platforms where economic policy decision-makers meet with leading international researchers. The results of these dialogues have also contributed to significantly greater transparency among the general public.”
Guido Friebel, Dean Faculty of Economics and Business 02
“The Faculty of Law is particularly pleased about the extension of the basic funding for the IMFS until 2037. This is a strong signal for our department regarding the close integration of economics and law. From the use of artificial intelligence in lending and the regulation of stablecoins to the independence of central banks: legal research at the IMFS addresses questions that concern citizens, regulatory authorities, and legislators alike. Furthermore, with Katja Langenbucher, a highly research-active faculty member has been recruited to strengthen the team of directors. On behalf of Faculty 01, I wish the IMFS continued success.”
Marina Wellenhofer, Dean Faculty of Law 01
“The extension of our funding is a strong endorsement of the importance of independent, rigorous research and policy analysis in advancing our understanding of monetary economics and financial stability. In an increasingly complex and rapidly evolving global environment, evidence-based analysis is essential to informing policy and the public and strengthening the resilience of financial systems.
This renewed commitment enables us to pursue thorough analysis and deepen our engagement with policymakers, the academic community and the public. We are grateful for this vote of confidence and look forward to generating insights that contribute to sound policy decisions, public debate and the awareness of the importance of price stability in the years ahead.”
