Panel Discussion on November 27: The Greek Crisis, Structural Reforms and Eurozone Convergence

Greece has been the country hardest hit by the Eurozone crisis. What were the weaknesses that made it so vulnerable to the crisis and to what extent have they been addressed during the adjustment programs? In a panel discussion, Dimitri Vayanos, Professor of Finance at the London School of Economics, and Nikolaos Vettas, Professor of Economics at Athens University, talk about the policy priorities for Greece with Lars Feld, member of the German Council of Economic Experts, and Vítor Constâncio, Vice-President of the European Central Bank. The discussion is moderated by Michael Haliassos, Professor of Macroeonomics at Goethe University.

The event is based on the book “Beyond Austerity: Reforming the Greek Economy”, edited by Vayanos and Vettas together with Costas Meghir, Professor of Economics at Yale University, and Christopher A. Pissarides, School Professor of Economics and Political Science and Regius Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics. In the book, leading Greek economists from institutions both within and outside Greece, take a broader and deeper view of the Greek crisis and the implications for the entire eurozone. Each chapter takes on a specific policy area, examining it in terms of Greece's economic reality and offering possible directions for policy. The topics range from macroeconomic issues to markets and their regulation to finance to the public sector.
